Colmenar Viejo lies a little over 30 km north of Madrid, in the North of Madrid, in the foothills of the mountains, with much of its land within the Cuenca Alta del Manzanares Regional Park. It has around 59,000 inhabitants and a strong livestock-farming tradition; its best-known building is the Basilica of the Asunción.
