Manzanares el Real lies about 50 km north of Madrid, at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains and next to the Santillana reservoir, in the Sierra Central. It is a municipality of almost 10,000 inhabitants with a centre of low houses around the 15th-century castle of the Mendoza family, and areas of detached houses and estates spread across its land.
