Living and selling in El Escorial
El Escorial lies about 50 km north-west of Madrid, at the foot of Mount Abantos, in the Sierra Central area. It should not be confused with San Lorenzo de El Escorial, where the Monastery is, although they form a single setting. It has around 17,000 inhabitants, and the Casita del Príncipe and part of the Valmayor reservoir are within its boundaries.
As well as the village, with traditional houses and flats, it has several settlements and estates of detached houses, such as El Alcor, Los Arroyos, Pinosol and Sotomora. El Escorial's Cercanías commuter rail station has trains to Collado Villalba and Madrid, and by road there are the M-600 and the M-505, which link up with the A-6. Its prices are moderate for the mountains. It is chosen by families who want a house with a garden in a historic and natural setting.
