Rivas-Vaciamadrid lies about 20 km south-east of central Madrid, next to the A-3, in the eastern metropolitan area. With more than 103,000 inhabitants, it is a young city that has grown mainly since the nineties: the old town of Rivas Pueblo, the estates of detached houses from the first phase, cooperative-built neighbourhoods such as Covibar and more recent developments in the Rivas Futura area. Much of its land lies within the Parque Regional del Sureste (south-east regional park), with the Campillo lagoon as a very popular spot.

Metro line 9 has three stations in the municipality and connects it with the Madrid network; by road, there are the A-3 and the M-50.
