Living and selling in the Sierra Norte de Madrid
The Sierra Norte de Madrid starts at San Agustín del Guadalix and El Molar, on the A-1, and reaches as far as the Somosierra pass, on the border with Segovia and Guadalajara. It is the largest area of the region: 49 municipalities with around 82,000 inhabitants in total, spread across the villages along the A-1 and the Jarama valley, the Lozoya valley and the Sierra de Ayllón. Among its best-known places are San Agustín del Guadalix, El Molar, Torrelaguna, Talamanca de Jarama, Buitrago del Lozoya, with its walled town, Rascafría, with the El Paular monastery, La Cabrera and Patones de Arriba. This is also where you will find the Hayedo de Montejo beech forest and several of the reservoirs that supply Madrid.
In the villages closest to Madrid, such as San Agustín del Guadalix and El Molar, there are flats, terraced houses and detached houses used as main homes; further up, housing is mainly stone village houses, single-family homes and estates of detached houses, many used as second homes. There is no Cercanías commuter rail: the main route is the A-1 motorway, with intercity buses from Plaza de Castilla. It is an area for people looking for nature, peace and quiet and lower prices, accepting longer journeys to the capital.
